Emad Mostaque · A Guide to the Age of Intelligent Economics

Intelligence is becoming abundant. Our economics still prices it as scarce.

The Last Economy is the diagnosis, the physics and the blueprint: why a system built for scarcity will read abundance as collapse, and how to build the third path while the window is open.

Part I · 01 / 06

The Thousand-Day Window

The book opens with its diagnosis. AI is the fourth and final inversion of economic value. Intelligence, scarce inside human skulls for all of history, has become a form of capital: copyable at near-zero cost, improving recursively, leaving human minds no economic refuge for the first time.

Slowing recoveries, wild variance, flickering states, everything correlating: the warning signs physicists look for in any system near a phase transition are already visible across the global economy. The window of meaningful choice, by the author's estimate, is roughly a thousand days.

We are about to achieve post-scarcity in the realm of intelligence, and our scarcity-based economic system is going to process this abundance as poverty.

The human floor is pinned by metabolism and subsistence; the machine curve only falls. It animates on its own; drag the rate to move the crossing yourself. The mechanism is the book's; the values are illustrative.

The Dying Paradigm

This part is the autopsy. Seven load-bearing beliefs (scarcity is fundamental, reward follows contribution, growth means health) are shown flipping into their opposites in the AI era, while GDP is exposed as a dashboard that books cancer and divorce as growth and reads abundance as recession.

Then the thesis is put on trial. The strongest objections (history always creates new jobs, friction buys decades, humans are unique, adaptation will save us) are steelmanned and answered one by one. The verdict: hope is not a substitute for physics.

Economics is a house built on sand. Not ordinary sand, but sand that is turning to water beneath our feet.

GDP books a cancer case as about $425,000 of growth and an open-sourced cure as a loss. The events stream in on their own; add your own to push the lines apart. The perversity is the book's; the curves are illustrative.

Part III · 03 / 06

The Engine of Order

Here the book builds its replacement science, Intelligence Theory, from first principles: every act of economic value is an act of sorting against entropy, performed at real thermodynamic cost, by agents selected for their ability to predict.

The economy is a generative engine that runs sustainably only under three physical laws (Flow, Openness, Resilience) and is powered by four capitals (Material, Intelligence, Network, Diversity) that do not add but multiply: a zero in any one collapses the whole. Even Smith, Marx and Hayek dissolve into one mathematics, three flows of a single engine.

Every act of economic value is an act of sorting.

Part IV · 04 / 06

The Network Prison

This part maps how the real economy behaves. Economic fate is set less by talent than by network position; power-law topology mathematically guarantees concentration, and AI amplifies it toward gravitational collapse.

But the same mathematics offers the exit. Hierarchical firms are obsolete 'slow AIs' losing to hybrid community architectures, and in connected, iterated games, cooperation and generosity are provably the optimal strategies: not sentiment, but structure.

Trust, in this new world, is not an emotion. It is a computational feature.

The Symbiotic Blueprint

Now the book turns architect. The scarcity-era social contract is replaced by a charter of Universal Access to Intelligence: a baseline of computation, a personal sovereign AI, and an open knowledge commons, grounded in dignity, capability and viability.

As an autonomous machine-to-machine 'Second Economy' emerges, humanity's irreducible role becomes the alignment layer. Civilization crystallizes into one of three attractor states: the comfortable cage of Digital Feudalism, the paranoid fortresses of the Great Fragmentation, or Human Symbiosis, built deliberately, with a gardener state and money designed for two different worlds.

The cage is so comfortable you will forget it is a cage.

The Nucleation of the New

The finale is strategy and purpose. The new world cannot be legislated from the top down; it must nucleate from small, demonstrably successful Symbiotic Zones, the Florences of the 21st century, whose prosperity spreads by imitation.

Seen through the new lens, macroeconomics' old mysteries dissolve, and the ending is an invitation rather than a forecast: a job bundled income with identity, community, purpose and structure. AI takes only the first, and frees us to consciously redesign the other four.

The machines are taking our jobs. Thank God. Now we can get to our real work.
